Hope Rekindled in Sudan as African Union Endorses Civilian Prime Minister Appointment

In a move widely viewed as a turning point for Sudan’s fragile political transition, the African Union has applauded the appointment of Dr. Kamil al-Tayeb Idris as the new Prime Minister, describing it as a progressive step toward the restoration of democratic order and inclusive civilian governance.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, welcomed the development in a statement released on May 20, 2025. He commended the Sudanese leadership and stakeholders for taking what he termed a “meaningful step” in aligning the country’s future with the will and aspirations of its people.

Dr. Idris’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for Sudan, which has been marred by protracted political instability, a humanitarian crisis, and a power vacuum following the military-led takeover. Known for his international credentials in law, diplomacy, and intellectual property rights, Dr. Idris brings a civilian face and global stature to a nation yearning for peace, reform, and reconstruction.

Chairperson Youssouf underscored the need for unity and cooperation across Sudan’s political and civic landscape. “All Sudanese stakeholders must now redouble their efforts toward a peaceful, civilian-led, and inclusive transition,” he urged, affirming that the African Union stands ready to support the process in concert with regional and international partners.

The AU’s endorsement of the civilian-led transition reinforces its long-standing principle of opposing unconstitutional changes of government and promoting democratic norms across the continent. This gesture not only validates Sudan’s move but also sends a message to other nations grappling with similar upheavals: that the path to stability lies in dialogue, inclusivity, and accountable governance.

Reiterating the AU’s commitment to Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and stability, the Chairperson emphasized that a durable political solution remains essential for sustainable peace and development.

As the world watches, Dr. Idris’s leadership will now be tested by the complex task of uniting a fractured society, rebuilding institutions, and navigating a return to constitutional order. But with the backing of the African Union and the resilience of the Sudanese people, the hope for a peaceful, democratic Sudan may be within reach.
