Greenlight International Trust on Saturday marched from Robert Gabriel Mugabe Square to Harare Gardens in an awareness campaign against drug and substance use among the society.
Greenlight Managing Director and founding trustee Mr Tawanda Makwiramiti said there is need for the government to tighten law enforcement against the drug peddlers. ” Drug cartels are known, the police is aware of them , they stay within our communities but they don’t get arrested why ” asked Mr Makwiramiti
” The Zimbabwe Republic Police should not let the society down by accepting bribes from these drug lords, most of these law enforcement agents are also into drugs so who is going to arrest the drug peddlers ” charged Makwiramiti. Drugs and substance abuse is now a cause of concern in the country, young and old , law enforcement agents and security agents are now also involved. Most criminal activities nowadays are associated with drug abuse in the society, young people including school going are seriously affected by drugs which has led to deaths, theft , murder and suicide cases.
The agenda for the Greenlight International Trust is to help underprivileged members of the society, to date it has donated over 3000 mobility devices . On the Saturday drug awareness march they donated 15 white cans for visual impaired and a wheelchair. Among the stakeholders who attended the drug awareness march was the ZRP , CID drugs , City of Harare, Midlands State University, University of Zimbabwe , Ministry of Health and Child Care , Ministry of Primary and secondary education to mention a few .
” We were disappointed by the Ministry of Public Service Commission who refused to attend this very important event , we wrote them a letter of invitation but they responded by saying they don’t recognize Greenlight International Trust citing that it is not registered as PVO . The President is against the drug and substance use but surprisingly other departments like Public Service Commission failed to comply with the President’s effort in fighting drugs ” added Mr Makwiramiti.
“We have a 5 year program in fighting drugs, we shall engage schools , youth organizations , Ministry of health and child Care to make the fight against drugs a success, we are going to create employment by making projects for youth ” concluded Mr Makwiramiti.
Greenlight International Trust was founded in 2005 , it has been fighting to get registered under the Private Voluntary Organization but it’s still facing some challenges to get registered to obtain the PVO status .
