Representing President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Ambassador Frederick Shava, delivered a compelling address at the Summit of the Future, Interactive Dialogue 2. Held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, the summit focused on enhancing multilateralism for international peace and security.
In his remarks, Ambassador Shava emphasized Zimbabwe’s commitment to the principles enshrined in the United Nations (UN) Charter, calling for global unity in addressing persistent challenges. He stressed the importance of collective efforts in finding lasting solutions to global issues, highlighting the need to strengthen multilateralism in the face of rising unilateralism and exceptionalism.
“Current global conflicts are stretching our multilateral systems to their limits, with the real possibility of implosion,” Ambassador Shava noted. “We must address the historical imbalances, from the legacies of colonialism and slavery to the unjust global financial system. The United Nations must remain the anchor for all collective efforts.”
The minister also called attention to Zimbabwe’s initiatives, particularly in youth involvement, as the country deliberately facilitates youth participation in decision-making processes. This focus on empowering young people is a critical component of shaping a better future for Zimbabwe and the world.
The summit’s theme of enhancing multilateralism resonated with Zimbabwe’s foreign policy of engagement, re-engagement, and reaffirmation, which has helped the nation broaden its diplomatic outreach and foster new partnerships.
Zimbabwe’s call for solidarity at the global level reflects the country’s dedication to a peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable future for all, reaffirming its support for the reinvigoration of the multilateral system to ensure socio-economic development on a global scale.
