ZIMBABWE ADVANCES BID TO HOST 2027 YOUTHCONNECT AFRICA SUMMIT

Zimbabwe has stepped up its bid to host the 2027 YouthConnekt Africa Summit, with a continental delegation arriving in the country to assess its hosting capacity and readiness for an event that could strengthen the country’s role in Africa’s youth development agenda.

The delegation, represented by Mr P. Ndizeye and Ms M. Sangare from the YouthConnekt Africa Secretariat, was welcomed by the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, Hon. T. Machakaire, who expressed Zimbabwe’s honour at receiving the continental representatives. The in-country assessment marks an important stage in the hosting process, allowing the Secretariat to evaluate the country’s preparedness and suitability for the proposed gathering.

The summit provides a platform for young people, policymakers, entrepreneurs, innovators and development partners to exchange ideas, build partnerships and explore solutions to challenges affecting Africa’s youthful population. Its focus on entrepreneurship, skills development, innovation and economic participation aligns with the wider continental drive to turn the potential of young people into productive capacity, employment and sustainable livelihoods.

For Zimbabwe, the hosting bid carries significance beyond the opportunity to stage a continental event. It presents a chance to showcase national youth development initiatives, strengthen cooperation with African institutions and connect young Zimbabweans with regional networks, investment opportunities and emerging ideas. Hosting could also raise the country’s profile as a destination for youth-focused dialogue and partnerships, provided the summit translates into practical opportunities that extend beyond the event itself.

Minister Machakaire commended the YouthConnekt Africa Secretariat for championing an initiative that places young people at the centre of Africa’s development agenda. He underscored the value of platforms that bring young leaders together with policymakers and development partners to share experiences and develop practical responses to challenges facing the continent’s youth.

The assessment will be important in determining whether Zimbabwe can meet the logistical, institutional and organisational requirements of hosting the 2027 summit. Its outcome will inform the country’s bid, although the visit should not be interpreted as confirmation that Zimbabwe has already been selected as host.

The broader opportunity lies in connecting continental engagement with domestic outcomes. If the bid succeeds, Zimbabwe could use the summit to advance partnerships in vocational training, entrepreneurship, technology, innovation and youth-led enterprise, while giving young people greater access to networks that support business development and employment creation.

As Africa seeks to harness the opportunities presented by its growing young population, the value of youth platforms will ultimately be measured by their ability to convert dialogue into skills, investment, enterprise and meaningful participation in economic development. Zimbabwe’s hosting bid offers an opportunity to contribute to that agenda while demonstrating its readiness to support youth-centred cooperation across the continent.
