Small-Scale Gold Miners Drive Zimbabwe’s Record Gold Output in 2024

Small-scale gold miners have been commended for their pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s gold sector, contributing over 65% of the 36.48 tonnes of gold produced in 2024. This achievement surpassed the government’s annual target of 35 tonnes and marked a 21% increase from the 30.1 tonnes recorded in 2023.

Speaking to members of the Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF), Fidelity Gold Refinery general manager, Mr. Peter Magaramombe, attributed the growth to the formalisation of artisanal mining. “The artisanal and small-scale mining sector delivered 65% of the 36.5 tonnes of gold in 2024, reflecting the loyalty and commitment of our miners,” he said.

Mr. Magaramombe also praised ZMF president, Ms. Henrietta Rushwaya, for encouraging small-scale miners to channel their gold through formal systems. “Your efforts have not only enhanced the country’s foreign currency earnings but also contributed to the formalisation of the sector, enabling smoother implementation of government policies,” he added.

Ms. Rushwaya expressed optimism for the year ahead, setting an ambitious target for small-scale miners. “We are proud of our achievements this year, but for 2025, we are aiming for nothing less than 40 tonnes,” she said.

The remarkable output from small-scale miners underscores their importance in Zimbabwe’s economy, particularly in strengthening foreign currency reserves and fostering sector organisation. With a growing focus on formalisation and increased production targets, the artisanal mining sector remains a critical driver of national development.
