Zimbabwe Electoral Commission Addresses Misleading Social Media Reports

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has strongly refuted recent social media reports claiming irregularities in the procurement of election materials for the 2023 Harmonised Elections. These reports, circulating widely online, have sparked concern among the public.

In an official statement, ZEC clarified that it has neither entered into any contracts nor procured election materials from individuals mentioned in the misleading posts. The Commission emphasized that all materials used for the elections were obtained in strict adherence to procurement regulations, with thorough oversight of all tender processes.

“We challenge anyone making allegations about contracts with these individuals to provide evidence,” stated a spokesperson for ZEC. The Commission further assured the public that the actual procurement costs were significantly lower than the figures being spread on social media, and all materials were delivered punctually.

Additionally, ZEC confirmed that the supplier involved in the procurement process had affirmed in writing that no contracts existed with the individuals mentioned in the reports. There were no intermediaries between the Commission and its election material suppliers, the statement clarified.

Describing the reports as inaccurate, misleading, and mischievous, ZEC urged the public to disregard such claims. The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and integrity in all electoral processes, assuring stakeholders that all procurements were conducted in a transparent manner.

As social media continues to play a pivotal role in disseminating information, ZEC emphasized the importance of verifying sources and relying on official announcements for accurate information regarding electoral matters.

For further inquiries or clarification, the public was encouraged to reach out directly to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.

This statement from ZEC aims to dispel misinformation and maintain confidence in the electoral process ahead of future engagements.
