South Africa’s local government elections got underway this morning.
Polls opened at 7am today, Wednesday 4 November, with over 29 million registered voters expected to vote at almost 23,700 voting stations nationwide.
The elections will determine new leadership for the country’s 257 municipalities, including eight metropolitan, 205 local and 44 district municipalities.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa said voting is proceeding across all nine provinces. The elections are seen as a key test of service delivery and accountability at local government level.
Today has been declared a public holiday to allow citizens to participate, with voting scheduled to close at 9pm.
