HARARE – First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa has joined the nation in mourning following the tragic helicopter crash in Marondera that claimed the lives of businessman Wicknell Chivayo, his wife Lucy, and four others.
The crash occurred on Wednesday evening, 30 September, at Kudenga Farm near Waddilove Mission, about 70km east of Harare, when a Bell 430 helicopter travelling from Chikomba to Harare went down at around 5pm. Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana confirmed there were no survivors, while family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo confirmed the deaths of the couple.
In a condolence statement, the First Lady extended her heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of all those who lost their lives in the tragedy, including Chivayo and his wife.
She said Chivayo will be remembered for his philanthropy and his understanding that people’s needs go beyond immediate assistance, noting that his support for individuals, families and communities reflected an appreciation of the practical challenges people face and the importance of responding to those needs.
Dr Mnangagwa said this area of service is close to her heart through the work of the Angel of Hope Foundation, where she continues to reach out to vulnerable families and communities, complementing efforts to improve lives and restore hope.
She prayed for strength and comfort for all the bereaved families during this difficult time, saying may the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace.
