The operation, conducted under the Provincial Joint Operations Command, brought together the Zimbabwe National Army, the Zimbabwe Republic Police and State security agencies, targeting illegal mining sites blamed for polluting water sources and damaging river ecosystems.

Authorities confirmed the recovery of 12 excavators believed to have been used by foreign nationals, which were found concealed in dense bush near the Beaulie area. The equipment is now under armed police guard at the sites.

At Champion Mine, security teams seized a wash plant, generator and submersible pump, while three suspects, including two private security guards, were arrested and are now in police custody.

In a related development, eight individuals were arrested for criminal trespass at Chikanga Farm as the operation widened to surrounding areas linked to unlawful mining activities.

A range of equipment used in illegal mining was confiscated, including gas blowers, submersible pumps, generators, shovels and heavy duty hammers, in what authorities describe as a decisive move to dismantle the logistical base of illicit operations.

An unregistered liquor outlet discovered within the mining zones was also shut down, highlighting the extent of informal and unregulated activities associated with the illegal mining networks.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the developments, stating that law enforcement agencies will maintain a strong presence in the affected areas to prevent the resurgence of illegal activities.

The crackdown follows growing concern from local authorities and environmental stakeholders over the use of hazardous chemicals such as cyanide in alluvial mining, which has been linked to water pollution and livestock deaths.

Communities downstream rely heavily on the Mutare River for domestic water supply, irrigation and livestock, placing pressure on authorities to act decisively against activities threatening the sustainability of the resource.

The operation marks a significant escalation in efforts to restore environmental integrity and enforce mining regulations, with officials indicating that further actions will be taken against individuals and syndicates involved in illegal mining.
