Mashonaland West Exceeds Maize Target, Showcasing Resilience and Agricultural Gains Amid Climate Pressures

In a remarkable demonstration of resilience and adaptive farming strategies, Mashonaland West Province has surpassed its maize production target for the 2023/2024 summer cropping season, achieving a new high of 384,000 hectares against an initial goal of 360,000. The achievement is being celebrated as a triumph for climate-smart agriculture, effective extension services, and the commitment of farmers, even in the face of erratic weather patterns.

Provincial Director in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Fisheries and Rural Development, Mrs. Madlinah Magwenzi, made the announcement on the sidelines of a field day held at Mupfumira Farm in Magunje. She noted the province’s significant increase in yield from 0.9 tonnes per hectare last season to 1.5 tonnes this year, translating to a leap in total maize production from 250 metric tonnes to 356 metric tonnes.

“These figures reflect more than just the expansion of land under maize; they demonstrate the impact of effective training, improved seed selection, and farmer dedication,” said Mrs. Magwenzi. “Despite the shortened rainy season, our farmers adapted quickly and made the most of what was available, highlighting our province’s potential as a national breadbasket.”

This milestone comes at a time when the nation is shifting its attention to the winter wheat season, with harvesting of the summer crop currently at its peak. Farmers like Mr. Armstrong Mupfumira are setting new standards in productivity, expecting to reap an impressive 11 tonnes per hectare from his 20-hectare plot. His success story underscores the value of aligning with expert guidance and following scientific agricultural practices.

“We didn’t have the luxury of early rains, but we took the right steps, selecting drought-tolerant seed varieties, consulting with extension officers, and rotating crops to maintain soil health,” said Mupfumira. “Good agricultural practices are not optional anymore, they’re essential.”

Beyond production figures, the event at Mupfumira Farm served as a platform to promote the continued adoption of climate-resilient farming methods. As climate change continues to disrupt traditional weather patterns, government and agricultural experts are urging farmers to pivot toward certified hybrid seeds, conservation agriculture techniques like Pfumvudza/Intwasa, and expanded irrigation infrastructure.

This provincial success story offers a glimpse into Zimbabwe’s broader vision of achieving food self-sufficiency, especially at household level. It is a testament to the power of collaboration between government, extension services, and small-to-medium-scale farmers in building a resilient agricultural sector.

With Mashonaland West leading the charge, Zimbabwe’s agricultural landscape appears increasingly poised to weather future storms, both literal and economic, while continuing to feed the nation and uphold food security as a cornerstone of national development.
