In a terrifying display of utter recklessness, a commuter kombi traveling from Chitungwiza to Harare last night subjected its passengers to life-threatening speeds and dangerous behavior that could have resulted in tragedy. The kombi, identified by the number plate ADS 6685, was visibly in poor condition but continued to speed down the road as if the lives of its passengers were of no consequence.
Boarding the kombi around 9 PM, passengers were immediately confronted with a harrowing experience as the driver pushed the vehicle to excessive speeds, with no regard for safety or road conditions. The kombi, far from roadworthy, rattled and shook under the strain, yet the driver ignored every possible caution, continuing to drive as though he was on a race track.
When passengers nervously pleaded with the driver to slow down, their concerns were dismissed out of hand. The conductor, instead of addressing the issue, coldly remarked, “Let it be. That’s how we operate,” and went even further, chillingly saying, “If your time of death has come, you just die. If you die here, it’s better because you won’t die alone.” These shocking comments only heightened the sense of danger and despair as the vehicle sped along.
This reckless episode shines a glaring spotlight on the ongoing disregard for road safety in Zimbabwe’s public transport sector. The kombi’s dilapidated condition and the driver’s complete failure to adhere to basic safety standards are clear evidence of a system that allows dangerous vehicles to operate without proper oversight. Passengers were left terrified, realizing that their lives were being gambled with on a daily basis.
The shocking negligence displayed by both the driver and conductor of the kombi should serve as a wake-up call to the authorities. It’s high time that comprehensive measures are put in place to enforce stricter regulations on public transport operators, ensuring that vehicles are properly maintained and that reckless driving is met with severe penalties. If such incidents continue unchecked, it’s only a matter of time before lives are lost.
