Mbare Traders Market Reconstruction on the cards

The government is preparing to reconstruct the Mbare Traders Market, recently devastated by fire.

This positive update was shared on Tuesday during a post-Cabinet briefing.

“The Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Honourable Daniel Garwe, updated Cabinet on the Mbare Traders Market Reconstruction,” the post-Cabinet briefing stated.

President Mnangagwa recently declared a State of Disaster following the destructive fire that disrupted the traders’ livelihoods.

The government has ramped up efforts to restore the market.

A recovery plan under the “Building Back Better” program is underway to bring the market back to full operation.

Aware of the urgent needs of traders and their families, the government has introduced various immediate support measures.

Immediate relief efforts include safety nets like cash transfers, school fee payments, psychosocial support, and child protection services.

Revival of the market is progressing, with the government offering loans, grants, and other support packages to help traders replenish their stocks.

Alternative workspaces have been designated. The City of Harare has provided the open space opposite Carter House as a temporary site during reconstruction.

Plans for the new market infrastructure aim to meet modern standards, with space to accommodate 10,000 traders.

A total of 4,695 traders (1,511 stall operators and 3,184 lessees) were directly impacted by the disaster, affecting the livelihoods of around 23,000 people.

Construction is expected to take at least seven months. The Mbare Traders Market project will also serve as a pilot for the planned Smart Market concept, intended to expand nationwide.

This intervention underscores the government’s dedication to supporting citizens and providing assistance in times of disaster.

The market’s reconstruction is a welcome initiative that promises growth and progress in the area.
