The Minister of Local Government and Public Works calls on Harare residents to support the Government’s Call to Action: No Compromise to Service Delivery, initiated by President E.D. Mnangagwa. The Ministry, in collaboration with Local Authorities, is focused on repairing and maintaining infrastructure to enhance services such as refuse collection, water and sewer reticulation, and traffic management in urban areas.
The Harare Beautification Programme aims to achieve the following:
- Encourage property owners to maintain, repair, and beautify their premises.
- Collaborate with Local Authorities to upkeep roads, sewer, and water infrastructure.
- Address issues like traffic congestion, faulty street lights, noise pollution, informal trading, blocked drains, and uncollected waste.
- Restore order and improve the city’s aesthetics, creating a clean and visually appealing environment.
- Foster civic pride and community ownership in city management.
- Promote sustainable urban development and environmental stewardship.
Property owners must adhere to Chapter 2 of the Model Building By-Laws of 1977, ensuring buildings are not health hazards, sources of unpleasant odors, or unsightly. Specifically, owners in Harare CBD and surrounding areas, particularly those notified by the City of Harare, must comply with these standards. Residents can seek guidance from the City of Harare to ensure their buildings meet the required standards.
As we move towards Vision 2030, the rejuvenation of Harare’s buildings is crucial. The upcoming SADC Summit in August highlights the need for our city to be attractive and well-maintained, boosting tourism and economic opportunities. By working together, we can make Harare a city that exceeds Vision 2030 standards, creating a lasting legacy for future generations. This collaborative effort will enhance economic development, restore order, and improve the city’s vibrancy and attractiveness.
