Renowned movie house, Ster-Kinekor shuts Sam Levy Cinema

Ster-Kinekor, the largest movie theater chain in Zimbabwe, has announced the closure of its Borrowdale, Sam Levy Village Cinema following the expiry of its lease agreement.

In a statement to stakeholders, the company expressed regret over the closure.

“We regret to inform you that our Sam Levy Village Cinema lease agreement, which lasted an impressive 10 years, is expiring on the 30th of June 2024. Unfortunately, the landlord has made the unexpected decision to repurpose the space and shift focus away from cinema,” the announcement read.

Ster-Kinekor is actively seeking an alternative location to continue serving its loyal clientele. In the meantime, its other two sites, Bulawayo and Joina cinemas, remain operational, offering movie goers ongoing entertainment options.

Notably, the Westgate cinemas in Harare also closed in 2017 for similar reasons.

The closure of one of the country’s premier cinemas is a disappointment for local movie enthusiasts. Many are hopeful that Ster-Kinekor will soon find another venue to continue its operations.
