Storm destroys schools, houses in Goromonzi

Heavy storms have wreaked havoc in Goromonzi district, blowing away roof trusses at two schools and 60 houses, leaving the community stranded.

Munhenga Ward 7 councillor in Goromonzi North, Ernest Chako said this in an interview yesterday at Howson Primary School in Goromonzi, Mashonaland East.

“This incident happened on Monday around 11 midnight, destroying roof trusses at Howson and Mwanza primary school(s) and at Chabwino Clinic; it destroyed all the medicines and papers and we have been left with nothing as a community. We are calling for help from well-wishers because soon the schools will be opening and this will affect children from learning,” said Chako.

He said teachers’ houses at the schools were not spared from the storm, and their working conditions will be compromised.

Chabwino and Howson primary schools are located in Goromonzi, which is not far from Harare, and draw their enrolment from the community, charging affordable fees.

But following the destruction caused by the storm, some children might be forced to seek school places elsewhere.

The district civil protection chairperson, Prisca Dube said only maize was available to support the affected households and had already reported the incident to the provincial board, and were waiting for a response.

“The storm was accompanied by strong winds and destroyed houses and schools in its wake. I made a report of the damages and quotations for the renovations,” she said.

She partly blamed poor quality building materials used to build the houses, pole and dagga in some cases, for the destruction suffered.

The heavy rains have affected many areas in the country, mostly rural communities.
