Zimplats Announces Leadership Transition as CEO Alex Mhembere Retires

Zimplats Holdings Limited has announced a change in executive leadership, with Chief Executive Officer Alex Mhembere retiring effective 1 November 2026.

According to an ASX market announcement released on 30 October, Mhembere’s retirement arrangements were finalised on 30 October 2026. He will remain as Chairman of the Group’s operating subsidiary, Zimbabwe Platinum Mines (Private) Limited (ZPM), to ensure governance continuity and retention of institutional knowledge.

Mhembere joined Zimplats as CEO on 1 October 2007 and has led the company for 19 years. During his tenure, Zimplats transitioned from early open-pit operations to a predominantly mechanised underground mining and integrated processing business. He oversaw a US$1.8 billion strategic investment programme covering mine replacement and development, concentrator expansions and the upgrade of the Selous smelter, which tripled smelting capacity and strengthened domestic PGM beneficiation.

His tenure also saw investment in sustainable infrastructure, including the commissioning of the 35MW Selous solar plant — one of Zimbabwe’s largest — as part of a planned 185MW renewable energy programme, alongside initiatives in skills development, local procurement, employment creation and community development.

The company has appointed Dr Stanley John Segula as Chief Executive Officer with effect from 1 November 2026.

Dr Segula, who has served as Managing Director of ZPM since May 2015, is a mining executive with over 30 years’ experience across the mining value chain. He previously held senior roles as Chief Operating Officer and Senior General Manager / Group Executive – Mining. He holds a PhD in Strategic Management and Leadership, an MBA, a BSc Honours in Mining Engineering, a Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency and is a Certified Professional Engineer.

The company said Segula’s extensive operational and strategic experience within the Group will ensure a seamless leadership transition and continuity in strategic direction.
