Schools to Resume 8 September as Ministry Outlines Priorities for Term Three 2026

Minister Moyo

All primary and secondary schools are set to resume for Term Three on 8 September 2026, with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education urging learners, educators, administrators and parents to prioritize quality and inclusive learning as the academic year draws to a close.

In a statement released on 3 September 2026, the Ministry described the final term as key for examinations, assessments and national education programmes. It reaffirmed that access to education is a right for every learner. Particular attention, it said, should be given to learners with disabilities and vulnerable students, including those returning from abroad, to ensure they are received, registered and given the necessary support. The Ministry emphasized that no qualifying learner should be excluded from school.

To support smooth operations, the Ministry encouraged parents and guardians to settle approved tuition and levies before schools open. It noted that payments must comply with national financial regulations and remain the responsibility of parents and guardians.

Academic focus will also center on the continued rollout of the Heritage-Based Curriculum. Schools were reminded to deliver the curriculum in a manner that nurtures learners’ overall growth by embedding national values, culture, skills and knowledge, while still ensuring thorough preparation for public examinations and other recognized assessments.

The Ministry said education delivery in Term Three must directly contribute to the country’s long-term development agenda. The Heritage-Based Curriculum, skills development and empowerment programmes are designed to support Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 2. By equipping learners with relevant competencies, values and entrepreneurship skills, schools are expected to produce a generation capable of driving industrialization, innovation and sustainable economic growth. The Ministry stressed that a strong education system remains central to achieving an upper-middle income society by 2030.

As Term Three is the period for final examinations, the Ministry called on schools and exam centers to properly prepare candidates for Grade 7, O-Level and A-Level tests. Non-candidate classes are expected to complete school-based year-end evaluations. Authorities were also urged to uphold the credibility and integrity of the examination process to ensure orderly administration.

The term will further include observances such as World Teachers’ Day, World Literacy Day, and the National Science, Sport and Arts Festival. While participation is encouraged, the Ministry advised that such activities should be scheduled without disrupting classroom time, as protecting learning hours is essential.

On student safety, the Ministry appealed to parents, school management and transport providers to ensure secure travel for learners, especially those who commute daily. Vehicles used must be licensed, in good condition and not exceed capacity, with full adherence to road safety rules. Parents and schools were advised to carefully vet transport operators to reduce risks of accidents and overloading.

To help reduce costs for families, the Ministry clarified that parents may buy school uniforms and stationery from any supplier of their choice, provided items meet school requirements. School heads and governing bodies were cautioned not to insist that these items be purchased only from the school.

The Ministry called for teamwork among school leaders, teachers, parents, communities and education partners to deliver a disciplined and successful term. It stressed the need for safe, supportive and inclusive school environments for all learners.

The Ministry said it remains committed to creating stable and compliant learning spaces, and that following these guidelines will help ensure a productive conclusion to the 2026 academic year.
