Minister Mhona Visits Kariba Dam Site Following Boat Accident

Otillia Makomo -KARIBA – The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development, Hon. Adv. F.T. Mhona, was in Kariba on Sunday, sent by His Excellency President Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa to assess the cause of the recent boat accident on Lake Kariba and to find lasting solutions to prevent similar tragedies.

The President directed the Minister to visit the site, meet survivors, and engage with local authorities and maritime operators on safety measures for passenger boats operating on the lake.

Addressing officials at the scene, Hon. Mhona said Government is deeply concerned about the loss of life and is committed to ensuring that all water transport operations comply with safety regulations.

“His Excellency President Mnangagwa has sent me here to get a first-hand account of what happened, to assess the cause of this accident, and to put in place measures that will ensure the safety of everyone who uses water,” the Minister said.

Hon. Mhona toured the accident site, inspected rescue operations, and met with the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, maritime police, and boat operators. He emphasized the need for strict adherence to the use of life jackets, proper boat certification, and weather monitoring before departure.

“We must not take chances with people’s lives. As Government we will work with all stakeholders to strengthen regulations, increase patrols, and ensure that every passenger boat is properly equipped,” he added.

The Minister also conveyed the President’s condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those still receiving treatment.

Local authorities and boat operators welcomed the visit, pledging to cooperate with Government in enforcing safety standards on Lake Kariba, one of the country’s busiest inland waterways.

Government has since announced that a full investigation into the accident is underway, and recommendations will be implemented immediately.
