HARARE – ZANU PF Harare Province has called on commuter omnibus operators, bus associations and rank marshals to ensure uninterrupted transport services on 31 July, urging the sector to maintain peace, order and normal business operations.
Addressing a meeting of commuter bus associations and rank marshals at the ZANU PF Harare Provincial Headquarters, the Harare Province Secretary for Transport and Social Welfare, Cde Gift “Riot” Mutengezanwa, said the engagement was aimed at aligning the transport sector with efforts to promote order, discipline and efficient public service delivery.
“The meeting seeks to align the commuter industry with Party policy, restore order and discipline, and ensure public transport delivers for the people as we push towards Vision 2030,” said Cde Mutengezanwa.
He described the transport sector as a critical pillar of the economy, saying it plays an essential role in moving workers and supporting national productivity.
“As we build Zimbabwe brick by brick, the transport sector remains the engine that moves the people, the workers and the economy,” he said.
Cde Mutengezanwa urged rank marshals to safeguard peace and ensure that public transport facilities are not used for activities that could disrupt public order.
“They should not become catalysts of anarchy or protests by parking their kombis or allowing vehicles to be used to carry weapons. The law will take its course against anyone found violating the law,” he said.
He called on transport operators to maintain full services on 31 July, stressing that it should be business as usual, while encouraging operators to deploy additional vehicles to cater for commuters travelling to and from work.
“You rank marshals have a duty to maintain the peace of the country. Do not be misled by false allegations circulating on social media from people who want to cause anarchy,” he said.
Speaking at the same meeting, Harare Province Chief of Security Cde Dumburashe said the province remained committed to maintaining peace and public order.
“We are ready to defend and maintain law and order in Zimbabwe. Bus operators, kombi operators and transport associations have a responsibility to promote peace and unity within their areas of operation,” he said.
Youth Political Commissar Cde Shiloh urged transport operators and rank marshals to uphold professionalism and project a positive image in their daily duties.
“We must be properly dressed and be brand ambassadors of the ruling party in our respective ranks,” he said.
Representatives of transport associations pledged to continue working with law enforcement authorities to preserve peace and public order.
The associations said they would assist the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) by reporting any individuals attempting to engage in unlawful activities, adding that they remained committed to ensuring that the transport sector continues operating normally while supporting peace and stability.
