HARARE – The Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) has mourned Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) Commissioner, Dr Engineer Martin Muduwa, describing him as a distinguished patriot and visionary academic who dedicated his life to national service.
Dr Muduwa died on 9 September 2026.
In a condolence message dated 18 September 2026, the Acting Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Reverend Paul Damasane, said the OPC learnt of his untimely passing with deep sorrow.
Rev Damasane conveyed condolences on behalf of His Excellency President Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, Honourable Acting President Dr Constantino Chiwenga, Vice President Hon Dr Kembo Mohadi and the entire OPC to the Muduwa and Chirara families, his children, colleagues at the ZHRC and in Government, the academic community and the nation at large.
Zimbabwe, he said, has lost a rare breed of professional who seamlessly blended engineering, academia and human rights advocacy.
Dr Muduwa was appointed Commissioner of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission on 19 December 2024, where he carved a niche by bridging technology and human rights. He became a leading voice in championing digital rights, data protection, online safety and ethical governance of Artificial Intelligence.
An accomplished academic, Dr Muduwa was a lecturer at Midlands State University. He held a DPhil in Data Science, an MSc in Big Data Analytics (1st Class), an MSc in Mechatronics and AI, a BTech (Hons), and a qualification in Information Security and Assurance (1st Class) from the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT).
Beyond his academic credentials, he was celebrated for mentoring scores of young professionals in cybersecurity and digital forensics, helping to build Zimbabwe’s next generation of tech leaders.
His distinguished work earned him national and international recognition, most recently the Global Business Achievers Network Platinum Award for Visionary Leadership and Sustainability Excellence in August 2026.
“The nation will forever remember his conviction that technology must serve people,” said Rev Damasane.
