HARARE – The Southern African Development Community (SADC) will once again place democratic governance at the centre of its regional agenda when it deploys the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to observe Zambia’s General Election scheduled for 13 August 2026.
The deployment underscores SADC’s continued commitment to promoting credible elections, political stability, peace and democratic accountability across the region through impartial election observation.
The observation mission, to be led by the Head of Mission with support from the Organ Troika and the SADC Electoral Advisory Council (SEAC), will engage political parties, electoral authorities, civil society organisations, security agencies, the media and other stakeholders before deploying observers across Zambia’s ten provinces.
Rather than focusing solely on polling day, the mission will monitor the entire electoral process, including the pre-election environment, voting procedures and the immediate post-election period, reflecting international best practice in election observation.
The deployment demonstrates SADC’s recognition that credible elections extend beyond the casting of ballots and depend equally on transparency, inclusivity, adherence to electoral laws and the peaceful conduct of all stakeholders throughout the process.
Following the election, the mission is expected to issue a Preliminary Statement on 15 August 2026, outlining its initial assessment of the electoral process before continuing longer-term observation and compiling its Final Report.
Over the years, SADC electoral observation missions have become an important mechanism for strengthening democratic institutions, encouraging peaceful political participation and promoting public confidence in electoral processes across Southern Africa.
The Zambia mission also highlights the regional bloc’s broader objective of safeguarding constitutional governance and preventing electoral disputes that have the potential to undermine political stability and socio-economic development.
As Southern Africa continues pursuing deeper regional integration, SADC’s election observation framework remains one of its key instruments for promoting democracy, peace and security. By deploying professional and impartial observers, the regional body seeks not only to assess electoral processes but also to encourage member states to uphold democratic principles that contribute to sustainable development and regional cooperation.
With Zambia preparing for a closely watched general election, the deployment of the SADC Electoral Observation Mission reinforces the organisation’s enduring role in supporting peaceful, transparent and credible electoral processes across the region.
