Major Boost as Air Zimbabwe Resumes Harare-London Flights

The Government of Zimbabwe has confirmed a landmark development for the aviation sector, with Air Zimbabwe scheduled to resume direct flights between Harare and London by the end of July 2026.

Tabling the report, the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Hon. Felix Mhona said restoring the route is central to repositioning the airline and reconnecting Zimbabwe to priority international markets.

Air Zimbabwe will fly three times a week from Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport to London Gatwick, with departures set for Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

To meet regulatory requirements immediately, the airline has secured an ACMI wet-lease with Spain’s Plus Ultra for an Airbus A330-300. The aircraft provides 302 seats in a two-class layout and comes with crew, maintenance and insurance, allowing the carrier to bypass previous hurdles around fleet certification.

For travelers, the return of non-stop service eliminates the need for long connections through the Middle East or other African hubs, cutting overall journey times and costs.

For trade, it reopens a direct air freight corridor that is critical to Zimbabwe’s horticulture exports. Fresh produce can now reach UK retailers within 24 hours of picking, which should reduce losses and improve competitiveness in European markets.

For the diaspora in the UK and Europe, the flight offers a more practical and affordable way to travel home, while also supporting inbound tourism. Officials expect stronger people-to-people links to translate into higher visitor numbers and increased investment flows.

The relaunch supports key objectives of National Development Strategy 2, particularly around Diaspora Engagement and Tourism. By easing travel and cargo movement, Government anticipates growth in both the services sector and export earnings.

The service is being rolled out under a broader restructuring program led by the Mutapa Investment Fund, which is working to rebuild Air Zimbabwe’s network and credibility. While the wet-lease addresses immediate capacity needs, plans to recapitalize the airline’s own long-haul fleet are progressing in parallel.

With launch preparations said to be well advanced, authorities expect the Harare-London service to function as both an economic enabler and a symbol of renewed connectivity — linking Zimbabweans abroad to home and opening fresh avenues for commerce and tourism.
