Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State and Government are set to convene an Extraordinary Virtual Summit today to deliberate on the political and security situation in Madagascar.
The Summit, scheduled for 17:00 hours Botswana time, will be chaired by President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa in his capacity as Chairperson of SADC.
According to the regional bloc, the meeting will consider the report of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, which has been monitoring developments in Madagascar.
The Extraordinary Summit underscores SADC’s continued commitment to promoting peace, political stability and democratic governance within the region through dialogue and collective action.
The Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation remains one of SADC’s key institutions responsible for conflict prevention, conflict resolution and the maintenance of peace and security among Member States.
Deliberations by regional leaders are expected to focus on the prevailing political and security developments in Madagascar and consider appropriate regional responses in line with SADC’s mandate of safeguarding peace, stability and constitutional order in Southern Africa.
The outcomes of today’s Summit are expected to inform the bloc’s next steps in supporting efforts aimed at maintaining peace and stability in Madagascar while reinforcing regional cooperation on matters of governance and security.
