Zimbabwe Deepens Caribbean Ties as Barbados Backs UNSC Bid

Zimbabwe is steadily strengthening its diplomatic footprint in the Caribbean, with President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa’s Special Envoy, Amon Murwira, intensifying high-level engagements to rally support for the country’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

As part of the ongoing Caribbean tour, Professor Murwira visited Barbados this Monday, where Zimbabwe’s candidacy received a positive reception from the host government, signalling growing convergence on global and regional priorities between the two nations.

During engagements, Barbados’ Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Christopher Sinckler, underscored the importance of multilateral cooperation, particularly in advancing reforms within the United Nations and other global institutions. Both sides emphasised the need for developing nations to act collectively in ensuring their voices are effectively represented in international decision-making processes.

The discussions further explored avenues for expanding bilateral and regional economic cooperation. Minister Sinckler highlighted opportunities in trade, investment, and knowledge exchange, pointing to efforts aimed at facilitating the movement of capital, business, and expertise. This approach includes strengthening ties through regional blocs such as CARICOM, while also reinforcing connections with African institutions.

A notable area of focus was the role of the African Export-Import Bank in bridging economic relations between Africa and the Caribbean. Minister Sinckler acknowledged the leadership of Mia Mottley in positioning the Caribbean as an emerging investment destination, with Afreximbank already making significant strides in the region and planning to establish a sub-office in Barbados.

Beyond economic matters, both delegations addressed shared global challenges, including climate change, sustainable development, and infrastructure deficits. There was consensus that countries of the Global South must identify practical and coordinated approaches to enhance resilience, reduce poverty, and improve livelihoods amid evolving global pressures.

The visit reaffirmed the strengthening partnership between Zimbabwe and Barbados, anchored on shared historical experiences, mutual interests, and a collective vision for inclusive global development. Both parties expressed optimism about the trajectory of relations, with plans for continued engagement and reciprocal visits to further consolidate cooperation.

As Zimbabwe advances its diplomatic outreach, growing support from partners such as Barbados reflects increasing momentum behind its international ambitions, while reinforcing a broader commitment to South-South cooperation and a more representative global governance system.
