Victoria Falls is poised to become the strategic heartbeat of Southern Africa’s energy transformation this February as Zimbabwe hosts the 2026 SADC Sustainable Energy Week, a high level regional platform expected to influence policy direction, investment flows and cross border cooperation in the power sector.
The conference places Zimbabwe, under the stewardship of the Minister of Energy and Power Development, Honourable July G. Moyo, at the centre of a critical regional dialogue on how energy can be leveraged as a driver of economic growth, industrialisation and sustainable development. The event will be officially launched by President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, reinforcing the importance Government is placing on energy security and regional power integration.
The gathering comes at a time when Southern Africa continues to face persistent electricity shortages, climate related disruptions and rising demand driven by urbanisation and industrial expansion. The regional energy deficit is estimated at more than 4 000 megawatts, a gap that continues to weigh on production capacity, investor confidence and economic competitiveness across SADC economies.
By hosting the conference in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe is offering both a symbolic and strategic venue, positioning itself not only as a host nation but as a convenor of solutions. The location strengthens the country’s diplomatic and sector leadership profile while providing a neutral regional platform for ministers, regulators, utilities, investors and technology innovators to align priorities.
Honourable July G. Moyo has consistently framed energy as the backbone of productivity, value addition and regional integration, rather than a stand alone utility sector. His policy posture links reliable power supply to mining output, agricultural processing, manufacturing growth and digital infrastructure expansion.
More than 500 delegates are expected to attend the week long conference, alongside at least forty exhibitors showcasing renewable energy technologies and efficiency solutions. The structure of the event combines policy dialogue, technical exchange and market exposure, allowing it to function both as a reform forum and an investment marketplace.
Under the theme of driving regional economic growth through clean energy and energy efficiency, discussions are expected to centre on policy harmonisation, cross border power trade, renewable deployment, grid stability, project financing models and energy efficiency strategies for industry and households. The emphasis is on converting policy commitments into bankable, implementable projects.
For Zimbabwe, the conference carries strong domestic strategic value. It provides a platform to showcase ongoing energy sector reforms, expansion of independent power producer frameworks, renewable energy investments and transmission modernisation programmes. It also allows Government to demonstrate regulatory openness and project readiness to regional and international financiers.
The presence and official launch by President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa elevates the conference from a technical sector meeting to a strategic development milestone. His designation as Head of State and Government underscores energy’s role within the broader national development agenda and Vision based economic transformation.
At regional level, the meeting is expected to deepen cooperation around power pool strengthening and grid interconnection, while aligning SADC initiatives with continental frameworks such as the African Single Electricity Market. Expanded interconnection and coordinated planning are increasingly viewed as essential tools for resilience, cost reduction and supply stability.
Beyond infrastructure and megawatts, the conference reflects a wider narrative shift in Southern Africa, where clean energy is now treated as a central economic enabler rather than a peripheral environmental concern. Renewable energy, efficiency and smart systems are being positioned as catalysts for job creation, innovation and inclusive growth.
As delegates converge on Victoria Falls, attention will focus on how effectively Zimbabwe, led by President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa and guided by Honourable July G. Moyo, can translate the symbolism of hosting into measurable regional outcomes.
