The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) has confirmed an attempted escape incident involving a convicted inmate at the Harare Magistrates Court on 13 January 2026, underscoring both the risks inherent in court operations and the effectiveness of coordinated security responses.
According to ZPCS, the inmate, identified as Itai Madhongo, who is serving a 38-year custodial sentence for unlawful entry, rape and armed robbery, was at the court to answer to a separate rape charge. While being held in a court holding cell, the inmate allegedly assaulted a ZPCS officer who had entered the cell to escort him to court proceedings.
Assistant Commissioner Meya Khanyezi said the inmate attacked the officer using a sharp object, inflicting injuries to the face and neck.
The injured officer was immediately rushed to hospital and is reported to be in a stable condition.
Preliminary information indicates that, in an attempt to facilitate his escape, the inmate forcibly undressed the officer and donned the ZPCS uniform in an effort to deceive security personnel.
However, the escape attempt was short-lived. A swift and coordinated response by the ZPCS SWAT team, canine unit, and correctional officers stationed at the court led to the inmate’s rapid recapture. He was found hiding under sewer drain pipes within the Harare Magistrates Court precinct.
Assistant Commissioner Khanyezi confirmed that a full internal investigation has been launched to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the inmate accessed a sharp object while in custody.
The ZPCS strongly condemned the act, describing it as a violent attempt to undermine security operations and threaten public safety. The Service reiterated its commitment to maintaining a secure and disciplined custodial environment, both within correctional facilities and during external operations such as court attendances.
ZPCS further expressed appreciation to all officers involved in the successful apprehension, noting that their professionalism and rapid response ensured the situation was contained without further harm.
The Service reaffirmed its mandate to uphold the rule of law and safeguard the safety of all Zimbabweans.
