In a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to bridge the digital divide, Ministers of Primary and Secondary Education and Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Honourable Torerayi Moyo and Honourable Tatenda Mavetera, respectively, launched the Jiti Secondary School ICT Hub in Shamva, Mashonaland Central.
The launch is in line with President Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030, which aims to transform Zimbabwe into an empowered and prosperous middle-income society. The ICT Hub is a testament to the government’s commitment to scaling up digitization projects across the country’s ten provinces, with a view to achieving a one laptop, one iPad ratio.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Moyo emphasized the significance of the ICT Hub, stating, “Today, we are launching the Jiti ICT Hub in Shamva, a transformative milestone in our ongoing efforts to integrate digital technology into Zimbabwe’s education system. This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with my esteemed colleague Honourable Tatenda Mavetera, marks a significant step toward bridging the digital divide in rural communities.”
The Jiti ICT Hub is equipped with state-of-the-art digital tools and internet connectivity, providing learners, educators, and the broader Shamva community with access to 21st-century skills essential for success in today’s knowledge-based economy.
Minister Mavetera highlighted the government’s efforts to promote digital inclusion, citing the launch of the Mbare Computer Information Centre in July last year, which aimed to equip young people with digital skills and reduce youth unemployment. Plans are underway to open more hubs across the country, a significant milestone for the Second Republic.
The launch of the Jiti ICT Hub is expected to have a profound impact on the education sector, enabling learners to research and learn in an enabling environment.
