Preparations are in full swing in Matobo District as the Government readies to host Zimbabwe’s 46th Independence Day celebrations on 18 April 2026. Excitement is palpable across Matabeleland South, with the announcement hailed as a landmark achievement in the Second Republic’s drive to decentralise national events and spread development opportunities throughout the country.
For the people of Matobo, this is more than a celebration, it is recognition of their immense contribution to the liberation struggle and a proud moment in their district’s history.
Matobo carries profound historical and spiritual weight. Anchored by the revered Njelele Shrine and shaped by the uprisings of 1893 and 1896, the district is a living testament to Zimbabwe’s resistance and resilience. It is also the birthplace of the late Vice President Dr Joshua Nkomo, affectionately remembered as Father Zimbabwe, whose leadership was pivotal in the fight for independence.
