The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has demonstrated renewed regional solidarity and diplomatic urgency in responding to Madagascar’s political crisis, following the Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit held virtually on 16 October 2025. The meeting, chaired by His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi, signalled the bloc’s firm commitment to restoring peace, stability, and constitutional order in the island nation.
The Summit brought together Heads of State and senior officials from Malawi, Tanzania, and Eswatini, alongside the SADC Executive Secretary, in what became a focused engagement on the worsening situation in Madagascar. The deliberations emphasized dialogue over confrontation, calling on all Malagasy stakeholders to pursue inclusive engagement and refrain from violence, looting, or destruction of property. The leaders underscored that political legitimacy and social peace can only be achieved through constructive dialogue anchored on democratic principles.
A major outcome of the meeting was the decision to deploy a Technical Mission comprising Organ Troika Member States, supported by the SADC Secretariat, to conduct a comprehensive fact-finding mission to Madagascar by 22 October 2025. The mission’s report, due by the end of the month, will inform a subsequent Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit, where regional leaders will deliberate on Madagascar’s political and security situation and determine a coordinated response.
SADC’s approach, under President Mutharika’s stewardship, reflects a broader diplomatic philosophy grounded in prevention, mediation, and reengagement.
