SADC Parliamentarians Convene in Victoria Falls to Chart AI-Driven Growth

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe — Zimbabwe’s Parliament proudly opens its doors today to the 57th Plenary Assembly of the Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum (SADC PF), as delegates from across the region begin to arrive for a week-long dialogue on advancing development in Southern Africa. Running from May 31 to June 7, 2025, at the iconic Elephant Hills Resort, the Assembly underscores Zimbabwe’s leadership in promoting regional integration and sustainable growth.

The Plenary Assembly, convened under the theme “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Effective and Efficient Parliamentary Processes in the SADC Region: Experiences, Challenges and Opportunities,” signals a transformative moment for the region. As the digital revolution accelerates, Zimbabwe and its fellow SADC members recognize the opportunity to leverage AI not just as a tool for parliamentary efficiency, but as a catalyst for inclusive and sustainable development.

Zimbabwe’s commitment to technological progress is evident in its recent strides toward digitization and innovation in governance, spearheaded by the Ministry of Information Communication Technology and Courier Services under Honourable Minister Tatenda Mavetera. By hosting this Assembly, Zimbabwe positions itself as a regional hub for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and forward-looking policymaking.

One of the Assembly’s key highlights is the discussion on the proposed Model Law on Prison Oversight, a testament to the region’s dedication to human rights and good governance. By strengthening oversight of detention systems, the law aims to align member states with international standards of justice and accountability. AI’s role in supporting this oversight, through data-driven monitoring and real-time analytics, demonstrates the region’s readiness to innovate for social justice.

The Assembly also reflects the region’s commitment to the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which envisions a prosperous and integrated Africa driven by its own citizens. Through deliberations on AI, parliamentarians will explore how technology can bridge gaps in education, healthcare, agriculture, and economic development, ensuring no one is left behind in the digital era.

Victoria Falls, with its breathtaking natural beauty, provides the perfect backdrop for this Assembly, symbolizing the potential for harmony between technological advancement and sustainable development. Zimbabwe’s hosting of the event not only enhances its diplomatic standing but also demonstrates its readiness to lead regional efforts toward modernization, democratic consolidation, and economic growth.

As the Assembly unfolds, the positive outlook for the SADC region is undeniable: collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to harnessing technology for the benefit of all citizens. Zimbabwe’s leadership at this Assembly will inspire confidence across the region, reminding us that with vision and determination, even the most ambitious development goals are within reach.
