ZRP Launches Investigation into Fatal Gweru Car Chase Incident Involving Officer

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched an investigation into a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of two individuals in Gweru on the night of April 28, 2025. The incident occurred along Bristol Road at approximately 10:30 PM and involved a Toyota Aqua that reportedly crashed into a tree during a high-speed pursuit by a police officer.

According to an official police statement released on April 29, the vehicle was being pursued by Constable Sakala of ZRP Mkoba at the time of the crash. Both occupants of the Toyota Aqua died at the scene, prompting immediate public concern and a flurry of videos and commentary shared across social media platforms.

In response to the public outcry, ZRP has acknowledged the viral footage and confirmed that Constable Sakala will face both criminal charges and disciplinary proceedings related to his conduct during the chase.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that both criminal and disciplinary action will be taken on Constable Sakala for his conduct,” reads part of the statement.

The police also conveyed condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the incident as deeply regrettable. As investigations continue, the ZRP has assured the public that further information will be made available as the case progresses.

The case has stirred debate over police pursuit protocols, raising broader questions about accountability and public safety in high-risk law enforcement operations.
