The government’s recent distribution of over 700 digital gadgets to agriculture extension officers in Mashonaland West Province signifies a transformative step in modernizing Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector.
By equipping officers with advanced tools for data collection, storage, and communication, this initiative addresses long-standing operational inefficiencies and positions agriculture at the forefront of the digital revolution. Extension officers, whose daily tasks include data processing and farmer support, welcomed the development.
The shift from manual data entry to digital platforms not only reduces risks such as loss of records but also enhances real-time communication with colleagues and supervisors, enabling more efficient farmer advisories. This digitization effort aligns with the government’s broader objective of leaving no one and no place behind in its developmental agenda.
Deputy Minister Vangelis Haritatos highlighted the nationwide rollout of over 6,000 gadgets, affirming the government’s commitment to capacitating extension workers as key players in agricultural transformation. By leveraging these tools, officers can ensure farmers receive timely, research-backed information, improving productivity and resilience in the sector.
Complementary measures, such as the provision of motorcycles to enhance mobility, demonstrate a holistic approach to addressing the challenges faced by extension officers, particularly in remote areas. Additionally, advice from the Ministry on pest management and crop selection underscores a proactive strategy in supporting food security and nutrition.
This initiative reflects the government’s dedication to modernizing agriculture through technology, ultimately driving economic growth and ensuring the sector’s contribution to the Vision 2030 agenda.
