The late former Vice-President Cde Phelekezela Mphoko stands as a towering figure in Zimbabwe’s liberation history. A pioneering freedom fighter, diplomat, and advocate for national unity, his remarkable life and contributions remain etched in the annals of the country’s history. Born on June 11, 1940, in Gwizane, Bubi District, Matabeleland North, Cde Mphoko’s early life was shaped by the oppressive realities of colonial rule, fueling his resolve to fight for liberation.
Cde Mphoko’s journey into the liberation struggle began in the 1960s when he joined the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU). After enduring imprisonment, he went on to receive military training in the Soviet Union in 1964, alongside notable comrades such as Dumiso Dabengwa and Ackim Ndlovu. Their training laid the groundwork for the formation of the formidable ZPRA (Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army) forces. Upon his return, Cde Mphoko emerged as the Chief of Logistics, earning recognition for his strategic acumen and ability to navigate complex logistical challenges. His nickname “Mgqala” (crowbar) reflected his forceful problem-solving approach.
As the first Chief of Logistics in ZAPU’s military command, he played an instrumental role in ensuring the steady flow of arms and resources to various fronts. His expertise was indispensable in the Joint Military Command formed by ZPRA and ZANLA in 1971, where he collaborated with luminaries like Josiah Tongogara. His role in ZIPA (Zimbabwe People’s Army) further demonstrated his ability to unite diverse factions toward a common goal.
Cde Mphoko’s leadership extended beyond the battlefield. In 1976, he was appointed as ZAPU’s representative in Maputo, Mozambique, where he adeptly navigated diplomatic relations with other liberation movements and governments. After independence in 1980, he continued to serve the nation as a diplomat, representing Zimbabwe in Russia, Botswana, and South Africa. His international engagements underscored his nationalist credentials, as he worked to promote Zimbabwe’s interests on the global stage.
In 2014, his appointment as Vice-President of Zimbabwe further solidified his stature as a national leader. Among his significant contributions in this role was his dedication to National Healing, Peace, and Reconciliation. Cde Mphoko’s tireless efforts to promote unity and heal the scars of the past reflected his unwavering commitment to building a cohesive and harmonious Zimbabwe.
