Magamba VTC Hosts Youth Empowerment Forum

Magamba Vocational Training Centre in Mutare will be the site of a vibrant gathering as President Mnangagwa joins 10,000 young people from across Zimbabwe for the Youth Empowerment Forum. This event, falling soon after the African Union’s Youth Day on November 1, aligns with the continent’s vision of youths as catalysts for social change, economic advancement, and sustainable development. With previous forums held in Mashonaland East and Masvingo, this initiative is a key platform for promoting vocational skills and boosting youth participation in economic affairs.

Zimbabwe’s youth empowerment drive is supported by a network of 45 Vocational Training Centres across the country, alongside 25 satellite centers established to extend skills training to more areas. Additionally, the government has committed to setting up at least one vocational center per administrative district. Construction at Sivomo Vocational Training Centre is nearing completion, with 75% of the work done, while materials and contractors are now ready for the Kadoma centre. Infrastructural improvements are also progressing at Magamba VTC, where a male hostel and a 3-hectare bean plantation for commercial production are being developed. Similar efforts are underway at Ruwa VTC and Tabudirira Vocational Training Centre, where a hectare of peas has been planted.

The government’s revival of the National Youth Service (NYS) program underscores its dedication to instilling patriotism, discipline, and responsibility among Zimbabwe’s youth. Launched at Nhakiwa VTC by President Mnangagwa, the NYS has trained over a thousand youths, with some already employed. To enhance youth empowerment, the government has crafted enabling policies and employment initiatives, recognizing that 66% of the population is under the age of 35.

Youth empowerment efforts have also tackled pressing social issues, including drug and substance abuse, with over one million youths reached through a massive awareness campaign at Dungane Farm in Mashonaland Central. Other government initiatives include Youth Service Training, which equips young people with essential skills; Youth Focal Desks in all ministries to streamline access to services; and Empower Bank Zimbabwe, designed to support youth-led enterprises.

President Mnangagwa’s leadership has clearly prioritized youth empowerment, recognizing the essential role that young Zimbabweans play in the country’s development and future.
