Zimbabwe Enhances Fisheries Sector with Strategic Initiatives

The Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development has launched a series of initiatives aimed at boosting Zimbabwe’s fisheries and aquaculture sector. These efforts are part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen food security, create jobs, and promote sustainable economic growth.

Key measures include the establishment of fish ponds and boreholes under the Presidential Community Fisheries Scheme, targeting rural areas to provide an alternative food source and support nutrition. The Ministry is also expanding fish breeding facilities with the help of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), creating more accessible sites for farmers across the country.

To address challenges like the high cost of fish feed and declining fish stocks, the government is conducting trials on alternative feed sources and enhancing surveillance on fishing activities through partnerships with regional and international bodies, including the signing of the SADC Charter on Monitoring, Control, and Surveillance.

These efforts are crucial for developing a robust fisheries sector that contributes to Zimbabwe’s economic goals, including becoming a middle-income nation by 2030. The Ministry has called for collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure the success of these initiatives.
