Bubi-Lupane Irrigation Scheme Paves the Way Towards Vision 2030

The Bubi-Lupane Irrigation Scheme is emerging as a pivotal model in Zimbabwe’s pursuit of Vision 2030, demonstrating significant strides in agricultural productivity. Supported by the Agricultural and Rural Development Advisory Services (ARDAS), this project is playing a crucial role in enhancing rural livelihoods and contributing to national food security.

This winter season, the scheme’s farmers have planted 180 hectares of wheat, with an expected yield ranging between 5 and 6 tonnes per hectare. This effort aligns with Zimbabwe’s national target of producing 600,000 metric tonnes of wheat in 2024. Gerald Khumalo, the Chairperson of the Bubi-Lupane Irrigation Scheme, expressed optimism about the forthcoming harvest, emphasizing the potential for both high yields and substantial dividends for the farmers involved.

The scheme’s achievements reflect the broader goals of Vision 2030, which aims to elevate Zimbabwe to an upper-middle-income society by improving rural economies. According to ARDAS Acting Chief Director, Leonard Munamati, the success of the Bubi-Lupane Irrigation Scheme showcases the effectiveness of irrigation projects in boosting incomes, enhancing food security, and improving overall living standards. He noted that the farmers’ increased earnings have enabled them to invest in better education for their children, purchase vehicles, and build improved housing, marking a significant uplift in their quality of life.

Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Richard Moyo, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the tangible results of government policies aimed at inclusive development. He praised the Bubi-Lupane initiative as a testament to the government’s commitment to leaving no one behind.

As the scheme prepares for a successful wheat harvest, the farmers are already looking ahead to the summer cropping season, buoyed by the adoption of scientific farming methods that have transformed the once-challenging Kalahari sands into productive farmland. This innovative approach continues to drive the success of the Bubi-Lupane Irrigation Scheme, positioning it as a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s agricultural future.
