Brigadier General (Rtd) Elasto Madzingira, who passed away on August 7, 2024, will be honored as a national hero and laid to rest at the national shrine tomorrow. This prestigious recognition celebrates his remarkable contributions to Zimbabwe, both during and after the liberation struggle.
Born in 1958 in Chivi, Masvingo province, Madzingira attended local primary and secondary schools. In 1978, as the liberation struggle intensified, he joined the ZANLA forces, adopting the Chimurenga name Ronald Zvenyika. He left university studies to cross into Mozambique, where he received military training at the Inhamhinga camp.
After training, Madzingira served as a medical officer, providing crucial medical support to fellow fighters. Following Zimbabwe’s independence, he served in the Air Force of Zimbabwe before joining the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) in 1985. He retired a decade later with the rank of Brigadier General. During his service, he held prominent positions, including Commander of the ZNA 1 Brigade and Chief of Staff Administration. He played a key role in modernizing the army and enhancing its operational efficiency, as well as improving the welfare of military personnel and their families.
Beyond his military career, Madzingira contributed significantly to civilian institutions. He was a Board Member of the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) and a Commissioner with the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC), where he fought against corruption with the same dedication he showed during the liberation struggle.
Madzingira was also a successful farmer in Masvingo, where he left behind a thriving farm and demonstrated a passion for agriculture. He was known for his role in community projects, always striving for unity and progress.
The family has expressed deep gratitude to the ZANU PF party and the Government for awarding him national hero status, describing him as an honest and determined individual. Wing Commander (Rtd) Wilmore Madzingira, a family spokesperson, said they felt honored by the Government’s gesture and were deeply pleased by the recognition.
Brigadier General Madzingira will be remembered for his selfless service and contributions. He is survived by his wife and six children. May his soul rest in peace.
