Zim Takes Healthcare to the Next Level with Quinary Hospital

The Second Republic is continuing its efforts to upgrade Zimbabwe’s healthcare system. A major milestone is the upcoming completion of the University of Zimbabwe’s super-specialist hospital in Avondale, Harare. Professor Paul Mapfumo, the Vice Chancellor of UZ, announced that the hospital is set to start operations in August 2024. This is happening alongside the construction of the Quinary hospital, which is expected to become a leading medical facility in the region.

A Quinary hospital represents the highest level of specialized healthcare, offering advanced medical care. The University of Zimbabwe’s facility will serve as a primary referral hospital in the country. Professor Mapfumo explained that a super-specialist hospital provides the highest level of care, which people often seek abroad. The completion of this hospital will save significant amounts of foreign currency, as patients will no longer need to travel overseas for medical check-ups.

The hospital will specialize in complex medical care, including oncology, cardiology, feto-maternal care, and renal care. Zimbabweans spend about US$400 million annually on medical treatment abroad. This new hospital is expected to reduce these expenses by offering advanced medical services locally.

In line with President Mnangagwa’s vision of inclusive development, the Second Republic’s establishment of the Quinary hospital marks a significant step in improving access to specialized healthcare. This will help Zimbabweans get the medical attention they need without having to go to other countries.
