Pamela Tremont has been officially sworn in as the new United States Ambassador to Zimbabwe in a ceremony held in Washington, D.C. Richard Verma, Deputy Secretary of State for Management, administered the oath of allegiance, praising Tremont as an exceptional diplomat and expressing confidence in her ability to strengthen the relationship between the US and Zimbabwe.
Ambassador Tremont is notable for being the first female US ambassador to Zimbabwe. Before this, she served as Deputy Ambassador in Rwanda and Zambia, bringing a wealth of experience to her new role.
In response to her appointment, Zimbabwe has extended a warm welcome to Ambassador Tremont, emphasizing the country’s motto, “Zimbabwe is a friend to all and an enemy to none.” Zimbabwean officials hope she will play a leading role in advancing positive relations between the two nations. Zimbabwe has expressed a desire for Ambassador Tremont to depart from the approaches taken by her predecessors, who were perceived as attempting to push for regime change. Despite these efforts, the Zimbabwean people have shown resilience and resistance.
Zimbabwe hopes Ambassador Tremont will adopt a new, constructive approach, in line with Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity: “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
As a woman, Zimbabwe expects Ambassador Tremont to show compassion and empathy towards those suffering under US-imposed sanctions. The sanctions, initially claimed to target a few individuals, are seen as causing widespread harm to ordinary Zimbabweans. Zimbabwe urges Ambassador Tremont to visit affected areas like Mbare, Epworth, Sakubva, Mucheke, and Chendambuya to witness the impact firsthand. By working towards lifting these sanctions, she could leave a lasting, positive legacy.
Zimbabwe also emphasizes its sovereignty, asserting that it does not need external guidance or lectures on democracy and human rights, especially from a country with its own human rights issues and controversial elections. Ambassador Tremont is urged to respect Zimbabwe’s sovereignty and avoid interfering in its internal politics. This includes not supporting or funding local political parties or groups, focusing on building diplomatic relations and promoting mutual interests, respecting Zimbabwe’s democratic process including free and fair election results, engaging with all stakeholders impartially, prioritizing economic cooperation, development, and humanitarian assistance, and being mindful of the historical legacy of foreign interference in Zimbabwe’s affairs.
By respecting Zimbabwe’s internal politics and focusing on diplomatic cooperation, Ambassador Tremont can build trust and strengthen the relationship between the two nations. Zimbabwe is confident that her stay will be productive and enjoyable, thanks to the hospitality of its people.
