BILLIAT, MUSONA FIRE SCOTTLAND TO CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE ADVANTAGE

By Aldridge Dzvene

Scottland FC took a significant step towards the next stage of the CAF Champions League after veterans Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona scored second-half goals to secure a 2-0 victory over Angola’s Petro Atlético in the first leg of the second preliminary round.

The Zimbabwean champions capitalised on an early numerical advantage after Petro Atlético were reduced to 10 men in the second minute, but had to remain patient before breaking the deadlock in the 67th minute through Billiat.

Scottland’s task was made easier by the visitors’ early dismissal, which forced Petro Atlético to reorganise defensively and concentrate on containing the hosts. Despite enjoying a numerical advantage for almost the entire contest, Scottland went into half-time without a goal, highlighting the challenge of breaking down a compact defensive formation.

The breakthrough eventually came through a combination of width and experience, with Walter Musona delivering a cross from the right that Billiat converted to give Scottland the lead. The goal shifted the pressure onto Petro Atlético, who had until then managed to frustrate the home side.

Knowledge Musona then doubled the advantage in the 80th minute, giving Scottland a two-goal cushion ahead of the return fixture in Angola. The late goal strengthened the Zimbabwean side’s position in the tie and rewarded their persistence after a difficult first half.

The result places Scottland in a favourable position, but the job remains unfinished. Petro Atlético will have the opportunity to respond on home soil, where an early goal could increase the pressure on the Zimbabwean side.

For Scottland, the challenge will be to preserve their advantage through disciplined defending, effective game management and greater attacking efficiency. The first-leg victory provides an important foundation, but qualification will depend on how well the team handles the demands of the return encounter.

The 2-0 result nevertheless represents an encouraging moment for Zimbabwean club football, with Scottland carrying a valuable advantage into the next stage of their continental campaign.
