MASVINGO — A severe hailstorm swept through Masvingo on Monday evening, damaging homes, businesses, vehicles and infrastructure across parts of the city.
The storm damaged rooftops, windows, vehicles and solar panels, while strong winds uprooted trees and affected sections of the power infrastructure.
Several homes were damaged, leaving some families temporarily unable to remain in their houses.
The City of Masvingo opened Mucheke Hall and Rujeko Hall to accommodate affected families as the Civil Protection Unit began assessing the extent of the damage.
Initial assessments indicated that at least 60 households had been affected, although authorities continued assessing the situation.
Commercial properties were also damaged, with broken windows and damaged roofs reported, while vehicles parked in exposed areas were struck by hailstones.
Despite the extent of the property damage, no deaths or serious injuries had been reported in the initial assessments.
Authorities are now focused on supporting affected families, clearing damaged areas and restoring infrastructure as the city begins recovering from the weather event.
