Masvingo Province is set to undergo a major infrastructure transformation following the approval of an extensive package of legacy projects to be implemented ahead of the 47th Independence Day celebrations, which will be hosted at Rutenga Growth Point in Mwenezi District on April 18, 2027. The programme reflects Government’s continued strategy of using national commemorations to deliver lasting socio-economic development in host communities.
The approved projects form part of Government’s broader development agenda aimed at ensuring that Independence celebrations leave permanent infrastructure and economic benefits beyond the commemorative event itself. The programme covers transport, education, health, water, housing and youth empowerment, with a strong focus on improving livelihoods in the host district and across the province.
Among the flagship projects is the construction of a modern 16,000-seat stadium complete with changing rooms and ablution facilities, a development expected to enhance sporting infrastructure while creating a venue capable of hosting major national events. Education will also receive significant investment through the construction and furnishing of 16 science laboratories, the establishment of 39 satellite schools, and the equipping and solarisation of computer laboratories to improve access to quality education.
The programme also prioritises the preservation of Zimbabwe’s liberation heritage. Rehabilitation works will be carried out at liberation war heritage sites, including the Hurodzevasikana Battle Site, as well as provincial and district Heroes Acres. In addition, 10 houses will be constructed for veterans of the liberation struggle in Mwenezi District, while a Youth Service and Vocational Training Centre will be established to strengthen skills development and youth empowerment.
Road infrastructure is another key component of the legacy programme. Rehabilitation and construction works will be undertaken on strategic routes, including the 150-kilometre Rutenga-Boli-Sango Road, the 45-kilometre Ngundu-Tanganda Road and the 84.2-kilometre Rutenga-Zvishavane Road. Ongoing works on the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road and the Makwi-Neshuro Road will also continue to improve connectivity and stimulate economic activity.
Water security and rural development have equally been prioritised. Government, working with development partners, will drill 105 boreholes, install 40 pumps, establish 50 solar-powered water schemes, rehabilitate 1,500 boreholes and establish 21 Village Business Units in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development. These interventions are expected to improve access to clean water while supporting agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods.
The programme also includes the completion of 13 stalled projects and the implementation of 54 devolution projects, reflecting Government’s commitment to balanced national development and ensuring that infrastructure investment reaches communities that need it most.
The 2027 Independence celebrations are therefore expected to serve not only as a national commemorative event but also as a catalyst for sustainable development in Masvingo Province, advancing Government’s vision of leaving no one and no place behind.
