In his keynote address, Belarusian Ambassador to Zimbabwe H.E. Yury Nikalaichyk reflected on the war’s legacy of resilience and the duty to safeguard historical memory. Defense Attaché Col. Sergei Syomin echoed the message, linking past sacrifice to today’s cooperation between Harare and Minsk.

The centrepiece of the afternoon was the unveiling of a commemorative plaque marking the 85th anniversary. The plaque stands as a permanent tribute to the soldiers and civilians who fought and died for freedom.

Addressing guests, Mayor Mafume thanked Belarus for its practical support to the capital. He highlighted that tractors and fire tenders supplied by Belarus are already deployed across Harare, boosting municipal service delivery.

“Today we remember shared histories of struggle. We also recognise present-day partnerships that help us serve our residents better,” Mafume said.

The ceremony drew members of the diplomatic corps, Zimbabwean government officials, war veterans, and the local Belarusian community. Mayor Mafume’s presence signalled the City of Harare’s commitment to international solidarity and historical remembrance.
