Harare – The construction of a new interchange at the intersection of Harare Drive and Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Road (Airport Road) is progressing rapidly, marking a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s infrastructure modernization programme. Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Honourable Felix Mhona, recently inspected the project, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s transport network.
The high-impact project is designed to alleviate congestion on one of Harare’s busiest traffic corridors, improve road safety, and facilitate smoother movement of goods and people to and from Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. By reducing travel times and enhancing accessibility, the interchange is expected to have a profound impact on the city’s economic and social landscape.
The project aligns with the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) objectives, which aim to develop resilient, efficient, and internationally competitive transport systems. By investing in modern transport infrastructure, the government is laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth, improved quality of life, and enhanced regional connectivity.
“The interchange is a critical component of our broader vision for a modern and efficient transport network,” said Minister Mhona.
“We are committed to delivering world-class infrastructure that meets the needs of our citizens and supports Zimbabwe’s development aspirations.”
The project is being implemented by Makomo Engineering, in collaboration with the Department of Roads, and is expected to be completed soon. Once operational, the interchange will transform the traffic landscape in Harare, making it easier for commuters to navigate the city and access key destinations, including the airport.
As Zimbabwe continues to invest in its transport infrastructure, the country is poised to unlock new opportunities for economic growth, trade, and investment, ultimately contributing to the realization of Vision 2030.
