Swanson dominates 2026 Castle Tankard line-up as 20 horses confirmed

The 2026 Castle Tankard is set for a highly competitive renewal after 20 horses were officially confirmed for Zimbabwe’s premier horse racing event scheduled for 9 May at Borrowdale Race Course.

This year’s edition, running under the theme “Live it, feel it, share it,” has drawn significant attention as it marks one of the strongest fields assembled in recent years, signalling renewed momentum in the country’s horse racing circles.

Champion trainer Debra Swanson once again emerges as the central figure of the competition, having entered nine horses into the final line-up. Her strong numerical presence continues a pattern of dominance in recent editions, where her stable has consistently shaped the competitive landscape of the Tankard.

Swanson returns as defending champion trainer after last year’s victory with Action Zone, a five-year-old gelding ridden by Mathew Thackeray, which secured the US$50 000 top prize. That win reinforced her reputation in Southern Africa’s longest-running sponsored horse race and set the tone for her continued influence in the sport.

Trailing behind Swanson in representation are Bridget Stidolph, Amy Parham and Thomas Mason, each fielding three horses. Their involvement adds depth to the field and sets up what is expected to be a closely contested race, with no clear runaway favourite at this stage.

Mason, speaking ahead of the event, observed that the size of this year’s field is a positive development for the sport, noting that it has been nearly a decade since such a large number of runners was assembled. He said this reflects growing interest and participation within the racing community.

Attention is also naturally centred on the defending champion horse, Action Zone, as competitors acknowledge its proven speed and consistency. However, with 20 horses in contention, trainers have expressed caution about making predictions, citing the increased unpredictability of a larger field.

Beyond the competition itself, Swanson highlighted the financial pressures facing horse racing and breeding, describing the industry as demanding and costly to sustain. She noted that marquee events such as the Castle Tankard remain essential for generating income and supporting operational costs for stables throughout the year.

She also acknowledged the continued support of Delta Corporation, describing the sponsorship as critical to sustaining the sport despite economic challenges. The US$50 000 prize purse remains a major incentive, attracting top talent and maintaining the event’s prestige.

Delta Corporation Marketing Director Irimayi Muzorewa said the Castle Tankard has grown into a leading regional racing showcase, drawing elite horses, experienced jockeys and established trainers. He added that anticipation continues to build as competitors prepare to contest one of the most sought-after trophies on the racing calendar.

As is tradition, the sporting spectacle will be complemented by post-race entertainment featuring performances from Alick Macheso, Nisha Ts and Ndunge Yut, rounding off a day that blends competition, culture and celebration at Borrowdale Race Course.
