Harare — The Government has intensified road safety measures ahead of the busy Easter and Independence holidays, with over 40 mobile enforcement and awareness teams set to be deployed across major highways to curb road traffic accidents.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister, Hon. Adv. Felix Tapiwa Mhona, launched the 2026 Easter and Independence Road Safety Awareness and Enforcement Campaign this afternoon at Gwebi College, warning that the surge in holiday travel demands heightened vigilance from all road users.
Running under the theme “Watch the Kilometre Ahead,” the campaign combines awareness and strict enforcement, with the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe working alongside the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Vehicle Inspectorate Department to monitor compliance and prosecute offenders.
Minister Mhona said the initiative comes at a critical time when traffic volumes are expected to rise sharply, as families travel for Easter gatherings and the country’s 46th Independence celebrations. He stressed that road safety must remain a shared responsibility.
“Let us wholeheartedly embrace the theme ‘Watch the Kilometre Ahead.’ It is our shared duty to ensure that every kilometre we travel brings us closer to our loved ones safely and joyfully,” he said.
Authorities indicated that the mobile teams will be stationed along key routes, targeting common causes of accidents such as speeding, reckless driving, and unroadworthy vehicles. The enforcement blitz is expected to run throughout the holiday period.
In a related development, the Minister revealed that the Road Accident Fund Bill is now at an advanced stage following nationwide consultations. The proposed legislation seeks to provide critical support services to accident victims, including emergency evacuation, medical care and funeral assistance.
The launch event drew participation from key stakeholders in the transport sector, law enforcement agencies and government departments, underscoring a coordinated national effort to reduce road carnage.
With traffic volumes expected to peak in the coming days, authorities are urging motorists and the travelling public to prioritise safety, warning that compliance with road regulations will be strictly enforced.
