Easter Holiday Travel Surge Triggers Safety Warning on Zimbabwe’s Roads

As Zimbabwe enters the peak of the Easter holidays, authorities and road safety advocates are issuing a strong warning to motorists and travelers to prioritise safety amid a sharp increase in traffic movement across the country.

The Easter period traditionally brings a surge in long-distance travel, with families, cross-border traders and holidaymakers taking to the roads. This heightened activity, however, also marks one of the most dangerous times on the national calendar, often associated with a spike in road accidents, fatalities and reckless driving incidents.

This year is no exception. With major routes linking Harare to destinations such as Bulawayo, Mutare, Masvingo and Victoria Falls already experiencing heavy traffic volumes, the risk factor has significantly increased. Over-speeding, driver fatigue, unroadworthy vehicles and disregard for traffic regulations remain key contributors to accidents during this period.

Authorities have emphasised that celebration must not come at the cost of life. The call is clear, drivers must exercise discipline, patience and responsibility on the road. Overtaking in unsafe zones, driving under the influence of alcohol, and ignoring road signs are behaviours that continue to claim lives unnecessarily.

Equally, public transport operators have been urged to adhere strictly to safety standards, ensuring vehicles are roadworthy and drivers are fit to travel long distances. Passengers also carry responsibility, speaking out against dangerous driving and prioritising their own safety.

Pedestrians and roadside traders, often active during holiday periods, are also being cautioned to remain vigilant, particularly along highways where visibility and speed can create dangerous conditions.

While Easter remains a time of joy, reflection and family gatherings, it also demands a collective commitment to safety. A successful holiday is not only measured by celebration, but by the safe return of every traveler.

As the nation moves, the message remains firm and urgent, arrive alive.
