Citizens Call for Stronger Measures Against Drug Abuse at Tsholotsho Public Consultations

TSHOLOTSHO, Citizens participating in ongoing public consultations in Tsholotsho have called for intensified awareness campaigns to combat the growing challenge of drug and substance abuse, warning that the vice is increasingly affecting communities, particularly among the youth.

Participants noted that drug and substance abuse has become a serious social concern in many communities, undermining the wellbeing of young people and threatening social stability. As a result, they urged authorities to scale up public education programmes aimed at raising awareness about the dangers associated with drug abuse while encouraging prevention initiatives at community level.

In addition to awareness campaigns, citizens recommended the establishment of more rehabilitation centres across provinces and districts to ensure that individuals struggling with addiction have access to treatment and recovery support services. Stakeholders stressed that the availability of accessible rehabilitation facilities is critical in helping affected individuals reintegrate into society and rebuild their lives.

Concerns were also raised regarding the composition of the board responsible for overseeing drug and substance abuse issues. Participants proposed that the board should include independent authorities, professionals, and experts in areas such as public health, social work, and rehabilitation. They argued that relying solely on law enforcement agencies, as currently stipulated, may limit the effectiveness of oversight and responses to the complex challenges associated with drug abuse. A broader representation of professionals, they said, would promote a more holistic and balanced approach.

Meanwhile, the consultations also deliberated on the proposed Biological and Toxin Weapons Crimes Bill, with citizens expressing concern over the potential risks posed by individuals who may possess toxic biological agents without proper licensing or regulatory oversight.

Participants called for stricter enforcement measures and stiffer penalties against anyone found in possession of dangerous biological materials without the necessary authorisation. They emphasized that robust regulation is essential to safeguard public health, strengthen national security, and prevent the misuse of hazardous biological substances.

The public consultations form part of the Government’s broader legislative engagement process, allowing citizens to contribute their views on proposed laws and policy frameworks that affect national safety, public health, and social development. Stakeholders in Tsholotsho expressed optimism that their contributions would help shape legislation that effectively responds to emerging challenges facing communities across Zimbabwe.
