The Zimbabwe pavilion quickly transformed into one of the busiest stands at the expo as visitors gathered to sample an array of traditional dishes that offered an authentic taste of the country’s diverse culinary traditions. The aromatic display of Zimbabwean cuisine created both curiosity and admiration among attendees, many of whom returned for second servings after discovering the distinctive flavours.
Tourism experts say the enthusiastic reception reflects a growing global appetite for gastronomy tourism, where travellers increasingly seek authentic cultural experiences through food.

The culinary showcase also served as a strategic tourism marketing tool, demonstrating how traditional cuisine can complement Zimbabwe’s already celebrated attractions such as wildlife, heritage sites and natural landscapes.

Visitors at the stand not only enjoyed the dishes but also showed keen interest in understanding the preparation techniques and the cultural stories embedded in Zimbabwean cuisine, highlighting how gastronomy can function as a bridge between cultures.

The initiative is spearheaded by the Patron of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Auxillia Mnangagwa, whose gastronomy tourism programme continues to elevate Zimbabwe’s food heritage as part of a broader cultural tourism strategy.

Under this initiative, local cuisine is being promoted as a key component of the Culture and Heritage Tourism Cluster, positioning Zimbabwe as a destination where visitors can experience not only scenic beauty and wildlife but also authentic culinary traditions rooted in the country’s diverse communities.
Analysts note that gastronomy tourism has become one of the fastest growing segments of the global travel industry. By showcasing its culinary heritage on such an influential platform, Zimbabwe is strengthening its destination brand while creating new opportunities for rural producers, chefs and cultural custodians.

The lively reception at ITB Berlin demonstrated that Zimbabwe’s culinary heritage carries powerful storytelling potential capable of enhancing the country’s global tourism appeal.
As Zimbabwe continues to promote its heritage through food, culture and hospitality, initiatives such as the gastronomy showcase are reinforcing the country’s message to the world, beyond breathtaking landscapes lies a rich cultural identity waiting to be experienced on every plate.
