The future trajectory of global tourism is increasingly being shaped by emerging destinations, and Zimbabwe is asserting its presence within that evolving landscape. At the UN Tourism Ministers’ Summit held ahead of ITB Berlin, tourism leaders from across the world convened under the theme “Empowering Emerging Destinations: From Potential to Performance,” focusing on strategies to translate tourism promise into measurable economic impact.
Representing Zimbabwe, the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon Barbara Rwodzi, highlighted Africa’s continued tourism resurgence, noting that the continent recorded 80 million international arrivals and generated US$55 billion in tourism receipts in 2025. Against this continental backdrop, Zimbabwe registered a 10 percent growth in arrivals, reaching 1,777,569 visitors, reflecting strengthening destination confidence and sustained recovery momentum.

Book NowThe Minister attributed this growth to strategic infrastructure upgrades, improved destination marketing and community-driven initiatives such as gastronomy tourism, which leverages local cuisine and cultural identity as competitive assets. The emphasis on heritage-based tourism aligns with Zimbabwe’s broader Vision 2030 development agenda, positioning tourism not only as a foreign currency earner but as a vehicle for community empowerment and employment creation.
Regional cooperation also featured prominently in Zimbabwe’s contribution to the summit. The country continues to leverage its participation in the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), one of the world’s largest conservation landscapes, as a model for cross-border tourism integration. Such frameworks strengthen regional circuits, enhance wildlife conservation, and diversify visitor experiences across Southern Africa.
Hon Rwodzi further underscored the importance of improving inter- and intra-regional connectivity, identifying air access, transport integration and streamlined travel policies as critical enablers for tourism expansion. She emphasized that sustainable tourism growth depends on innovation, skills development, clear policy frameworks and strong collaboration between government and private sector stakeholders.
As global tourism transitions from recovery to expansion, emerging destinations are increasingly competing not on volume alone but on authenticity, sustainability and community impact. Zimbabwe’s focus on heritage preservation, inclusive participation and product diversification signals a strategic pivot toward high-value, experience-driven tourism.
With international platforms such as ITB Berlin amplifying visibility, Zimbabwe is positioning itself not merely as a recovering destination, but as a proactive contributor to shaping tourism’s next chapter—where emerging markets move from potential to performance, and from participation to leadership within the global tourism economy.
